What Is the CDCP?
The Canadian Dental Care Plan is a federal program that helps make dental care more affordable for eligible Canadian residents who do not have access to private dental insurance.
The CDCP helps pay for a range of eligible oral health services. However, it may not cover the full cost of every treatment, and some services require preauthorization before they can be covered.
Who May Qualify?
To qualify for the CDCP, you must meet the current federal eligibility requirements, including:
Being a Canadian resident for tax purposes
Not having access to private dental insurance or coverage
Having an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000
Having filed the required Canadian tax return for the previous year
If you have a spouse or common-law partner, they must also have filed their tax return so your adjusted family net income can be determined.
Eligibility is reviewed regularly, so it’s important to keep your CDCP information current.
CDCP Care at Our Clinic
Your dental needs are personal, and your CDCP coverage can depend on the treatment you require. At Shin Dentistry, we provide preventive, diagnostic, restorative, and other dental services that may qualify for coverage under the CDCP.
Before treatment, we can review the coverage information available to us and discuss any expected costs. Some treatments may require preauthorization from the CDCP before coverage can be confirmed.
What Dental Services May Be Covered?
Depending on your needs and current CDCP coverage, eligible services may include:
Dental examinations
X-rays
Dental cleanings and scaling
Fluoride treatments
Dental sealants
Fillings
Root canal treatment
Gum disease treatment
Tooth extractions and other eligible oral surgery
Dentures
Certain crowns with preauthorization
Certain sedation services
Some services have frequency limits or require preauthorization. Not every dental procedure is covered, and orthodontic services are currently not available through the CDCP.
Our team can help you understand whether recommended treatment may qualify for coverage before you proceed.
How Much Does the CDCP Cover?
The amount the CDCP pays depends partly on your adjusted family net income.
Patients with an adjusted family net income below $70,000 do not have a CDCP co-payment for eligible services at the CDCP-established fees. Patients with an income between $70,000 and $89,999 may have a co-payment.
Even if you don’t have a co-payment, you may still have an amount to pay if the cost of treatment is higher than the CDCP-established fee or if you choose a service the plan does not cover.
We’ll discuss expected costs with you whenever possible before treatment begins.

FAQs
How do I know if I’m eligible for the CDCP?
To qualify, you must meet the current federal eligibility requirements. These include being a Canadian resident for tax purposes, having no access to private dental insurance or coverage, having an adjusted family net income below $90,000, and filing the required Canadian tax return.
Is the CDCP only for seniors?
No. The program was introduced in stages, with seniors among the first groups to become eligible. The CDCP is now available to eligible Canadians of all ages who meet the program requirements.
Does my income affect how much the CDCP pays?
Yes. Your adjusted family net income determines whether a CDCP co-payment applies. You may also have additional costs if the clinic’s fee is higher than the CDCP-established fee or if a service isn’t covered.
Does Shin Dentistry bill the CDCP directly?
For covered CDCP services, eligible claims are submitted directly to Sun Life. You are responsible for any applicable co-payment, additional charges, or services that aren’t covered by the plan.
What treatments may be covered?
The CDCP may help cover services such as examinations, X-rays, cleanings, fillings, root canal treatment, gum treatment, extractions, dentures, and certain other procedures. Some treatments require preauthorization, and coverage depends on current CDCP rules.
Does the CDCP cover Invisalign or other orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic services are currently not available through the CDCP. If you’re considering Invisalign or another orthodontic treatment, our team can discuss your treatment and payment options with you.
How soon can I book after I’m approved?
You can book care on or after the benefit coverage start date provided with your CDCP approval. Contact Shin Dentistry once your coverage is active to discuss appointment availability.
